Houston Mustang Field

Houston Mustang Field

Mustang Field

Over the past decade and a half, the Houston Mustangs' playing field has been developed a bit at a time by the efforts of the Mustang Bullpen Club, the coaches and the ballplayers. With very little help from the school system or the city and county, the creation of Mustang Field has been a labor of love. The fundraisers and the sponsorships help insure that the field is maintained and that improvements are made as the budget allows.

When Houston High School opened its doors to a freshman class in 1989, our field's site was a rough vacant lot. The Mustang Bullpen Club was organized in 1991 and it assumed the responsibility and the financial burden of making that land into a baseball field. With only the very basics of two dugout benches and a backstop, Mustang Field opened for varsity play in 1992. Since that moment, improvements and additions are made with each passing year. Our efforts and dedication are ongoing and and are solely sponsored and funded by the Mustang Bullpen Club and its friends.

During 2006, the Mustangs Bullpen Club undertook the task of building a field house for our Mustangs Baseball team. Countless hours went into this monumental task.  And through the help of our benefactor, Mr. Charles DeBella, our dream of a field house has finally been realized.  Committees were formed, plans were drawn - and redrawn. Schoolboard members were contacted, conjoled, and politely harrassed, until all plans finally were approved to begin contruction.

During the fall of 2007, construction finally began on our new facility.  Over the next few months, contrete was poured, blocks were stacked and walls were erected.  The Mustang Bullpen Club has had 2 "Raise The Roof" fundraising parties that have been monumental successes.  We have raised over $55,000 toward the field house costs with these two fundraisers. Along with the annual support from the parents and corporate benefactors, the facility has been completed and Houston baseball players now have a "First Class" facility to practice in.

The new facility has a locker room, coaches office, weight facilities, and automated netting for batting, pitching, and field work. Along with the field house, the project included a new concession stand located directly behind home plate, and restroom facilities! Video cameras have been installed to record all game action and protect our facility. All this could not have been accomplished without the support and dedication of the Mustang Bullpen Club Board!

Mustang Field requires many, many hours of maintenance and we thank those who have contributed their time and money to make our field possess the quality that our players deserve. We would especially like to thank Mr. Bill Avant for putting 200% into the field. Without his supervision and dedication, Mustang field wouldn't be the field you see today. The Houston coaches, parents, and players before us, along with Mr. Avant, have set a standard of excellence for Mustang Field.

Each class passes the torch to the next to maintain our field of dreams.

All for the love of the game...
